A Week of Flowers 2021, Day 4

I jumped into A Week of Flowers, hosted by Cathy of Words and Herbs to lift the spirits of those in the Northern Hemisphere facing the gloomy days of winter, on Day 2, featuring a couple of photos of my garden in February 2021.  I missed Day 3 but for Day 4 I've selected photos of three of the stars of my April garden.

The Dutch Iris started to bloom in March, peaking in April.  Most of these are Iris 'Sapphire Beauty' but there are a few 'Mystic Beauty' there too.

The Leucospermums (aka pincushion flowers) were in full bloom in April.  This is Leucospermum 'Goldie'.

This is Leucospermum 'Spider Hybrid', mingling with Narcissus 'Geranium'.  Grevillea 'Peaches & Cream' is photobombing the view in the upper right corner of the photo on the left.

    1. The Iris foliage is already coming up and there are buds developing on Leucospermum 'Goldie' so hopefully spring 2022 will feature plenty of both, Amelia.

  2. Oh, wonderful! The Dutch Irises are a favorite (I enjoy all Irises and have some here, too). The Leucospermums are so special. Of course, I can't grow them here, but I remember enjoying them during trips to more southerly locations. :)

    1. I've been surprised at how well the Leucospermum have done here, Anna. I have one other variety, 'Brandi', that also bloomed last year and still another that has yet to deliver its first blooms. I'm hoping 2022 will be the year for the last one to finally come through.

  4. Your garden is beautiful Kris. The iris look really healthy and happy and those Leucospermum are enviable! Thanks for joining in! :)

  6. It's always good to see some flowers ! I'm waiting patiently to see if my Leucospermum will bloom -this is it's second year and it's grown alot but it's in a container so we shall see. Frankly I can't believe it's still alive !

    1. I have another Leucospermum, 'Sunrise', that spent its first year in a large pot before being transplanted to one of my backyard borders in 2020. It didn't bloom in 2021 but, like yours, it grew quite a bit. My fingers are crossed that it delivers in 2022.

  7. Great choices! I was just admiring a picture of Leucospermum 'Goldie' (or something very similar) in my La Palma directory. However, I am more taken with colours of 'Spider hybrid'. It's lovely, but it feels strange seeing it with narcissus!

    1. Narcissi have surprised me with their ability to handle the conditions in this garden. Coastal Southern California has a true Mediterranean climate and I've planted a lot of species native to other areas of the world with Mediterranean climates like South Africa and parts of Australia.

  8. Leucospermum... I sigh with appreciation and not a small measure of envy.
I love iris, and after many years, I conclude its the dutch iris that's the easiest and lowest maintenance of all. I added close to 100 of those beauties in various spots in the garden. Can't wait for spring.

    1. A hundred Iris bulbs! I'm sure you'll be happy with the results. I don't think I grew Iris of any kind until we moved to our current location. I haven't had great success with bearded Iris for reasons that elude me but the Dutch Iris and Pacific Coast Irises have been very rewarding. I plant a few more every year.

  9. Wonderful pictures Kris - both the irises and especially the Leucospermum. So lush - and even a peak at a Grevillea, which is always a pleasure (that makes me a bit green!) when I look at your blog. Which I don't do nearly often enough, because I keep forgetting to look for you on Bloglovin', where I follow you!

    1. Thanks Cathy. Grevillea 'Peaches & Cream' and 'Superb' bloom year-round here so they pop up a lot in my blog posts, whether intended or not ;)
