Both my dahlias and my zinnias are developing some ugly foliage - the product of higher-than-usual humidity combined with scorching heat - but the flowers are still coming. I've been cutting off the most hideous leaves.
Oh, love that Orbea variegata, or Stapilia, as I still call it. I grew it as a house plant for a long time. Eventually, the stench of those gorgeous blooms won out. Chavli
Luckily, I have a poor sense of smell and then, with only a single flower and it being outside, the Orbea flower's scent wasn't powerful enough to overwhelm anyone. Thankfully!
Orbea variegata did very well in my garden. Finally vanished one winter. Cool plant, flowered suprisingly quite a lot. Yours looks good! Never got a scent from it--don't know why. I notice a bad one from Stapelia grandiflora.
Love that 'Brown Sugar' Dahlia! Sorry for the pun, but sweet!
Sure miss the garden--just too hot for me out there. Maybe Friday it will cool off enough.
The local forecast from Weather Underground had predicted falling temperatures following Labor Day but that hasn't happened, at least not yet. It's 93F now. I don't have the tolerance for heat I used to have, although I put in 3 hours in the garden yesterday morning (even though I felt like I was melting).
Kelsey Ann Joy does bring joy. Weather is wonky everywhere. We have just emerged from a heat dome (87F) and will go down to 43F tonight all the while smothered in smoke. Hopefully your temperatures cool quickly.
I hope the dropping temperatures also help in eliminating those smoky fires, Elaine. I'd hoped we were going to get some thunderstorms here (we didn't, at least not in my area); however, then I heard those storms in Northern California were sparking fires caused by lightning. We never win in a weather game.

Beautiful, you're in a nice groove with all the Dahlias right now. I feel ready to chop everything down, haha.

ReplyDeleteIt's flashier than my Stapelias - and I didn't get close enough to get a whiff of its scent.
