    1. These are all plants that have given up on living inside the house, not because I didn't water them but probably because the humidity is too low. As one after another threw in the towel, I stuck them in that shady corner in the front garden because I couldn't face throwing them out. Their numbers have multiplied but they're clearly doing better there, without any help from me!

  2. Oh, I can so relate to this post and your comment above! I take all my houseplants outside in May, and the ones that struggle over the winter and early spring indoors almost always seem happier outside. It's fascinating to witness the improvement. Some of the reasons, in my situation, are changes in sunlight and indoor small pests that are eliminated by birds and beneficial insects when the plants are outdoors. Unfortunately, today was the day to bring them back in for the winter. It's nice to have plants in the sunroom during the cold months, but they're always happier when they go back outside in the spring. <3

    1. In my case, it seems as though these "house" plants (2 Scheffleras, a Dieffenbachia, 2 Phiodendrons, and a Dracaena reflexa) prefer life outside in my climate year-round. I'm not entirely sure why but, for the last couple of years, one after another newly purchased house plant gives up on indoor living within 6 months. They get water from a nearly sprinkler and they're surviving without any help from me (although the Scheffleras are getting leggy).

  3. Those look good. They look like they have a good protected spot there.

My houseplants pretty much all moved outside and stayed there. They seem to be able to handle what cold we get just fine under the patio cover. Sanseverias, no problem even in the high 30Fs we get a few nights a year. I only bring in Phaelenopsis because the Santa Anas are hard on them. Out again in April. They seem happy to be back out again even with nights in the low 50Fs. Higher humidity outdoors. I pay more attention to them when they are outside!

    1. I can't really say I pay more attention to these now that they're outside. I tucked them away in that corner because I couldn't quite bring myself to chuck them outright and - lo, and behold - they thrived! I've repotted some already and I think I need to go ahead and do that with the rest if I intend to hold onto them indefinitely. A few could go into the lath house but they wouldn't get watered as reliably as they do in that corner with a nearby sprinkler next to the hedge.
